Throwback Thursday: 1999 Women's World Cup

Way back in 1999 (Whoa!  20 years ago!), I was at my Grandma and Pa's house with my cousins during the final game for the Women's World Cup.  I remember watching it upstairs in their library, all of us older cousins sitting on the floor.  The game ended tied, went into overtime, that ended tied, then went to kicks.  We were on pins and needles for each shot.

When Brandi Chastain ripped off her shirt in celebration, we were going crazy jumping around in front of the TV.  Well, all but my cousin, Mark.  He nonchalantly asked, "What did they win a pizza party or something?"  He was always full of jokes.

Throwback Thursday: The Snerly Cake

You know those family stories that you like to tell and retell?  This is one of those stories for our family.  And since my mom's birthday was on Monday, this particular story came to mind.

One of our family traditions is to have cookie cake birthday cakes.  Growing up, we would always order from Great American Cookie.  They are so good!  I make my own now, but that's just because
  1. The closest Great American Cookie when we lived in Duncan was all the way in Lawton, and I didn't always have time to make that drive.
  2. The cookie cakes from Walmart weren't great because they were way too sweet.
  3. There are certainly no GAC stores here in Oman.
  4. I do make at least my own birthday cake healthier.
My most recent birthday cake.  I could use some decorating tips from GAC.

Throwback Thursday: Braided Hair

This past Sunday was Father's Day.  I sent my dad a text, posted a picture on Facebook, and celebrated with Stephen and our boys.  But I started reminiscing about a favorite story about my dad.  It's a long story.  And since I can't find the pictures I'm looking for to go along with this story, enjoy these other pictures of my dad and me.

Throwback Thursday: Summer with Grandma and Pa

As mentioned before, there were a few years where I would get to spend a week with my Grandma and Pa all by myself.  I would then go back for another week later in the summer to spend a week there with my sister and my two older cousins.  When my younger cousins were old enough, we all went together for what was then named "Camp Cousin Huggin'."

Cheesy names aside, it was really a lot of fun.  The first year, my Grandma had shirts made for all of us.  I'm pretty sure my older male cousin was mortified.  My aunt even went around and took pictures of us all together.  One of these pictures still sits in my room as a fond memory of the past.

At Grandma's house, we would play cards, ping pong, and billiards.  We would sleep in the garage apartments to feel older.  We would play soccer in the front yard or at the local school.  We would walk to Sonic to get slushes.  We would check out movies from the (I kid you not) local bait, ammo, and movie store.  It was 5 movies for $5 for 5 days.  We checked out a lot of movies.  We would go to the lake to swim and ride jet skis.  We would go to the farm for hay rides, fishing, s'mores, and feeding the cows.  We would swim.  We would do egg hunts with a prize egg with money inside.  We would laugh A LOT.  We would walk to or from church or Pizza Hut.  There was even the time we were practically kicked out of Pizza Hut for making too much noise.  I still blame Pa who taught us how to make loud whistle noises with our straws.  We would check out where Pa worked and play around in his antique cars.  To this day, I'm still shocked that I didn't know back then that he had a pilot's license and plane.  Why did we never go see that?

Throwback Thursday: Christmas in Montana

I don't want to do more than one post in a day, but Christmas on the beach reminded me of another very different Christmas we have celebrated.  Back in 2014, we drove up to Montana to spend Christmas with my Uncle Jay, Aunt Crys, cousin, and my parents.  It was so much fun and magical.  And I was sick the entire time.
Look at that untouched snow for a white Christmas!
The drive up was beautiful and dry.  No snow in site until we hit the pass to get to Bozeman.  I was able to enjoy the beauty of nature as we drove through Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana without being anxious about the road conditions.  It had just started snowing in Bozeman just before we arrived, but it was pretty light.  We went to church that night with my aunt and uncle to watch my cousin perform in the Christmas program.  My parents didn't arrive for a few more days.

Throwback Thursday: Christmas in Florida

Before we moved, we spent every other Christmas in Florida with Stephen's side of the family.  I loved these Christmases because it promised warm weather.  Occasionally I didn't bring cool enough clothes and would resort to wearing tanks I had meant for layering.

Last year was a Florida Christmas, and FaceBook and my line-a-day journal have kindly reminded me of memories from last Christmas as well as jogged memories from Florida Christmases past.  In my line-a-day journal I noted things such as walking to Target, walking to Chick-fil-A for lunch (yes, both are walking distance from my in-laws' house), long and short runs, and an actual chilly day that required a light jacket.  FaceBook reminds me of the Christmas of bikes and riding those bikes in shorts and a t-shirt.  We walked to parks and the pool (an outdoor pool, btw).
Pretty sure we fit about 1 of the 4 bikes we all received for Christmas in the car for the drive home.  Yes, the seat needed to be raised, but it was fine for a quick ride.

Throwback Thursday: Hiking

I've spent down time today looking up hiking trails in Oman.  I've found a few good websites.  This site is a wiki site of many hiking trails.  It's so many, I'm a little intimidated.  This site is a blogger's first hand experience and tips that a friend sent to me.  And this site is put out by Oman's tourism ministry, and it shows trails and details difficulty, whether they're marked, highlights, picture spots, etc.  I plan on printing the 3 maps they provide so I can mark off on my own which ones we've visited.

All this research has me super excited about hiking here.  Our family loves to hike.  Yes, sometimes the boys get cranky near the end of the hike.  We usually try to plan something fun and cooling like ice cream or sno cones for the end of a hike as a reward, especially if they were good and didn't complain (or at least not too much or unreasonably).

I'm also reminiscing about our past hikes as a family.

While in Duncan, we tried to hit every trail that the kids could handle in the Wichita Mountains.  Stephen's parents joined us for many of these hikes whenever they would come to visit.  Some would be surprisingly cold, some would be warmer than expected, some involved large wildlife (longhorn cattle and bison).

Throwback Thursday: Labor Day 2017

Labor Day weekend was this past weekend in the US.  It was nothing to be noted here.  In fact, our kids started school the day before.  So while friends at home took trips to lakes, we spent two days in school.  Honestly, the kids loved it.  To each his own.

But since it was Labor Day weekend, I’ve seen pop-ups and reminders on my devices of how I spent last Labor Day weekend.  Nearly my entire family met in Wewoka, Oklahoma to celebrate the 60th wedding anniversary of my grandparents.  Not everyone stayed the whole weekend, but we did get to see many people.  There were cousins, aunts, uncles, great aunts, and great uncles.  We took the kids on a hike to find fossils, we had a spades tournament, we held a reception at their church, we talked, and we played many impromptu games of Rook.

Throwback Thursday: Anastasia

Yesterday, I finally convinced the boys to watch Anastasia with me.  It was probably my favorite non-Disney movie growing up.  I loved it!  But my boys saw it as a girl movie, so they wouldn’t watch it with me.  That is, until we were down to the last few animated movies the boys hadn’t watched recently.  Ha!

The film is a fanciful adaptation of what happened to the Grand Duchess Anastasia.  It features a young Anya who has forgotten her past and a couple of con-men who are trying to pass off a fake Anastasia as the real thing to the Dowager Empress who lives in Paris.
