Foodie Friday: Amigos

In and near Seeb (which is near the airport here), there are 2 new malls.  One is Mall of Muscat which has created quite a bit of buzz as it has the largest aquarium in the Middle East.  I'm hoping to go soon, so I will update everyone on how the trip goes.  The other mall is the Al Araimi Boulevard Mall.

This mall is large with lots of opportunity.  But it is still new, so it is mostly opportunities.  There is a Carrefour, restaurants, a food court, and a few small shops.  Not a lot of shops yet, but there are plenty that are legitimately under construction.

In the food court you will find the absolute best Mexican restaurant in Muscat:  Amigos.  It is amazing!  They serve burritos, tacos, quesadillas, bowls, desserts, and more.  And all the food highlights deliciously authentic Tex-Mex flavor.  You get to choose your fillings, so you can go with refried beans with Mexican rice or black beans with cilantro-lime rice.  You can choose steak, chicken, ground beef, or other options.  You can take or leave the veggies to your liking.  I've even heard their soup is to die for.  That's what I'm planning on ordering the next time I go.  You can also get real Mexican sodas.  And if you order a fountain drink, you can get free refills (an American luxury rarely found here).

Now in full disclosure, the lovely couple that opened the restaurant are dear friends of ours.  They are from Louisiana, and their US roots mean that they know what we like to eat.  This restaurant is a labor of love for them.  They have dreamed and planned for a long time.  They even went out and found the best chef, Gustavo, who brings the authentic Mexican flavor to the food.  He is the sweetest, kindest man.

I need to go back to take pictures of the actual food.  We may or may not have wolfed it down.  But we will be going back!  They opened May 4th for a soft opening, and have had limited hours thanks to Ramadan.  But late night business is going strong, and they are under construction for a second location closer to our house.  Woot!
